June 26, 2010 - Open House at the River Institute
Many community members were able to attend the open house at the St. Lawrence River Institute of Environmental Sciences on Saturday, June 26, 2010 from 9:30am to 1pm. They learned about the River Institute's exciting scientific research projects and participated in the hands-on activities! For more information, view the event poster.

The Cornwall Carbon Reduction Initiative (CCRI) is launching a new project, with the help of a new $46,900 grant from the Community Go Green Fund. Jim Brownell, MPP for Stormont-Dundas-South Glengarry, congratulated the CCRI for its continued efforts. Read more ou lisez ce message en français.

The River Institute hosted its Annual Conference on May 5-6, 2010, with the Fundraising Event on their Anniversary Day, Wednesday, May 5, 2010. Acclaimed outdoor photographer, Ethan Meleg, delivered his photo presentation, “Confessions of a Crazed Photographer”, at 7:30 pm. View the event poster here.

The Raisin Region Conservation Authority hosted its 12th Annual Earth Day Celebration and Tree Giveaway on Saturday, April 24, 2010. Visitors were able to pick up their bundle of free conifer seedlings starting on Saturday, April 24, at the Raisin Region Conservation Authority. View the event poster here.

For the second year in a row, the City of Cornwall hosted its “Spring Clean-Up Day”, a one day cleaning blitz of the city’s public areas, parks, and private lots. City residents formed groups to tackle key areas of the City where wind and melting snow left litter behind. The City also encouraged area residents to participate in a number of other activities taking place during Earth Week. Read the full press release.

On April 19, the Cornwall Carbon Reduction Initiative (CCRI) hosted a discussion and screening of No Impact Man, a documentary. The No Impact Man Earth Day screening took place at the Cornwall Public Library and was a resounding success. Community members were able to discuss some of the highlights of the film, as well as some share some of their own experiences reducing their carbon footprint.

The CCRI partnered with the Eastern Ontario Training Board to present the Learning Garden! Our first hands-on workshop "Planning your Garden" was held Saturday, April 17 from 10am-1pm at the Seaway Seniors Centre. Attendance was at capacity and those participating learned lots of exciting information about starting their own vegetable gardens from a local Master Gardener!

Soon, even more Ontario homes and businesses will be powered by green energy. Premier Dalton McGuinty held a press conference to announce that four local projects will be producing and selling solar energy to Ontario for the next 20 years.
Three solar farms in the Township of South Glengarry are just a few of the 184 contracts awarded to projects across the province, which McGuinty said is equivalent to a $9 billion private sector investment in green energy. Read more here.
